The Not Zero Cavity Club

When we took Joshua to the dentist this last time, they did his first set of x-rays.  Unfortunately they revealed that he had eight cavities in his molars.  apparently in the previous visits where he was declared a member of the Zero Cavity Club were just based on visual inspections, which can't see cavities between the molars in the back.  These cavities were apparently because of insufficient flossing, so we are now doing daily flossing with all three kids.  That won't fix the current situation, which requires two trips to the dentist.  Today was the first of the two trips, and I took him because I had some availability during the day when Meghan didn't.  He was worried about getting a shot, but fortunately they sufficiently numbed the area enough that he couldn't feel the injection, so he didn't even realize he got a shot, which was good.  They gave him some scented nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), as they do for all patients, which was supposed to help keep him calm.  They also had a TV mounted on the ceiling which kept his interest the entire time, so he did really well.

After he was done, he wanted to play on the video game systems in the lobby.  I think this was a Wii U (I'm not as up on the systems as I used to be).  To my knowledge, he has never played a real video game before, so this was somewhat of a landmark event in his life, at least from my perspective, especially because it involved a version of Super Mario Brothers, which every boy should get to experience at some point.  I had to work with him on the controller, but he got it pretty quickly.  He wasn't fluid or quick with his actions, but he was able to navigate his character around the screen a little bit.
Because of his numbness, he wasn't supposed to eat solid food (or anything that would require chewing) for three hours, lest he unknowingly chew through his cheeks or tongues.  They suggested ice cream and even gave us a coupon for it (kinda weird coming from a dentist), so we went to a self-serve frozen yogurt place and enjoyed a treat.  He'll have round two next month, but I expect it will go just as smoothly as today did.
