With all the rain we've had lately, the grass is pretty long, so today I told Joshua I needed to mow the yard. He knows he can't use the mower, and although he has a toy mower, I think the fact that it doesn't actually cut anything is enough to make it uninteresting to him. But he thought of a way that he could help that would actually work (to a degree anyway). He went and got his toy saw, which does have plastic teeth, and proceeded to start cutting the grass with it. He worked on it for quite awhile, pleased with his progress, despite the fact that it made no actual appreciable difference in the mowing process. But I appreciated his enthusiasm and desire to help. Natalie also contributed by eating some of the long blades of grass, as she likes to do.
